What is a common name?

The common name is a term other than a specific epithet or a scientific name that is used to indicate the organism. For example, "human" is a common name that refers to homo sapiens . Ordinary names are easier to say and remember than scientific names, and therefore they are so attractive; After all, everyone remembers an "African elephant", but Loxodont Africana is a bit more difficult to remember, let alone a magic. To begin with, unlike scientific names, they are not standardized, which means that the same common name can be applied to multiple organisms, or one organism can have a lot of common names. This can lead to confusion, while using a scientific name is a very clear identity of the discussed organism.

The general name can also be extremely wide, which can also be a disadvantage. For example, the trees in the genus Quercus are commonly referred to as "oaks", but there are trees in this family. By using the term "oak" people avoid clear distinction, and this can be problematic.Different oaks grow in different areas and show different properties and use a wide blanket ignore this problem. Some attempts have been made with more detailed common names such as California oak, black oak and live oak, but these conditions are not consistent or perfect.

Derivation of common names varies. General names such as Cat, Dog and Sheep have been for these organisms longer than specific epithets, and many of these names have ancient roots. Some modern common names are derived from scientific names or vice versa: Narcissus, Dahlia and Rhododendron are all common names as well as names for specific plants. In some cases, common names were intentionally created to create an unforgettable name Proorganism and others were improved from existing common names.

In some cases, the body has no common name. This does not necessarily mean that the organism is not common, only thatthat the organism is not well known to people, well used or considered valuable to humans. In fact, many organisms without common names play vital ecological roles, they were simply not used in agriculture or everyday life, so people are not familiar with them. Newly discovered organisms also tend to lack common names until it can be centered.
