What Is a Transcription Unit?

Transcription unit means that the synthesis of RNA is catalyzed by RNA polymerase. When RNA polymerase binds to the beginning of a gene, which is a special sequence of a promoter, transcription begins. The first base pair that is transcribed into RNA is the start point of transcription, with a promoter sequence surrounding it.
