What is the operational cholangiogram?

Operational cholangiogram is a type of imaging study conducted during gallbladder surgery. The cholangiogram uses a dye that is opaque to the X -rays to reveal the outline of the bile ducts, the tube that drains the bile juice from the gallbladder. This is useful because it shows whether the bile canal is blocked with gallstone, allowing the surgeon to remove the stone during the operation. Operational cholangiogram can also help reveal all bile duct injuries that could occur during surgery. Bile duct injury is a well -known complication of gallbladder surgery when keyhole or laparoscopic techniques are used. When a person eats the bile from the gallbladder and passes, even if the bile of the pipe into the intestine, where it helps to spend greasy foods. Sometimes the bile inside the gallbladder crystallizes into stones that can block the ascent. This can cause the condition of the knob as cholecystitis, where the gall bladder swollen and inflamed. Stones can faint from the gallbladder and be stored in the bile pipe fromSymptoms such as pain and jaundice, in this case, surgery may be required to remove the gallbladder and stones.

The process by which is performed by the operational cholangiogram is called cholangiography. Laparoscopic tools that are inserted into the abdomen through small skin cuts are used to perform the gallbladder surgery and to perform a cholangiogram. A special dye, known as the contrasting medium, is injected into the bile duct and acquired X -ray images that the surgeon is able to display on the monitor. Since the contrasting medium does not allow to go through X -rays, the X -ray images show the areas where it is present, highlighted. This means that the operational cholangiogram will clearly show whether the bile pipe is blocked or stones and should also detect any accidental damage caused by surgery.

In addition to the operational cholangiogram exOther methods of cholangiography, which can be used to investigate the bile ducts, are also being placed. What is known as percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) includes injection of the contrast medium through the skin into the liver area that flows into the bile ducts. This procedure can be performed when the patient is awake and can be used to decide what other treatment is necessary.
