What is bleparofimosis?

Blefarofimosis is a condition characterized by a horizontal narrowing of palpebral cracks or opening the eye. It is often associated with ptosis, decreasing eyelids on both eyes. The condition is usually congenital, which means that malformation of bleparofimosis lids is already present at birth. In normal adults, the horizontal opening of the eyelids measures approximately 0.98 to 1.18 inches (about 25 to 30 mm), while in individuals with bleparofimosis it measures about 0.78 to 0.86 inches (20 to 22 mm).

The causes of bleparofimosis usually result from inherited genetic abnormalities. In genes, defects or mutations are usually responsible for stimulating the production of protein involved in the formation of eyelids, which often leads to abnormal lid development. Due to this prominent malformation, the eyes cannot be fully opened, which leads to restrictions in the sense of supervision.
