What is phosphatidylethanolamine?
phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is an important phospholipid that forms cellular membranes and organelle membranes. It is also called cephaline because it is abundant in the brain, spinal cord and other nerve tissues. Up to 45% of brain phospholipids consist of cephalin. Cephalin plays an important role in knowledge and memory. In bacteria, phosphatidylethanolamine is the main phospholipid; In animals, lecithin or phosphatidylcholin is the most abundant, but cephaline is just a second. While phosphatidylcholine has choline connected to a phosphate group, PE has ethanolamine. PE fatty acids may be identical or different, but usually occupy 1.2 carbon positions.
