What is the Charlson Index?
The Charlson Index is a tool used to assess the likely mortality of patients with multiple serious diseases. Such conditions called co -morbidity can interact with each other and can reduce the patient's chance of survival. Doctors and scientists can determine the Charlson's patient index by adding scores assigned to any condition that the patient has, resulting in a single number that indicates probable mortality. This information may be useful in clinical trials and treatment products where a doctor may want to consider the patient's chance of survival in recommendations. Many conditions, including diabetes, myocardial infarction, metastatic cancer and liver disease, have been assigned to the Charlson Index.
