What is a tie?

TIE line, also known as a suitcase or private suitcase, is a physical line that connects two or more private telephone systems. This connection allows business or other large organization to set up a communication network that facilitates multiple places of cooperation. To call the customer, tie lines can create the look that more locations are actually one place.

To have a separate telephone line for each person, computer or fax machine would be unbearable for most large organizations.
