The main treatment goals of Inner Child Therapy are to improve the client's self-esteem and self-worth, reduce self-pity and self-hate, and improve self-love and self-soothing. In the words of E. Mcgough (1991), it helps an individual to establish a positive therapeutic relationship with himself.
There are no unified treatment steps and techniques for the two inner child treatments, so as long as the basic concepts are consistent, therapists with different theoretical orientations can achieve their goals according to their skills and procedures. For example, Swain (1995) uses imagery, Benton (1990) uses psychodrama to assist alcoholics and their families, Cameron (1991) uses personal grief rituals, Picucci, (1992) uses role-playing, and Guyer (1995) uses hypnosis. On imagery, Mcgough (1991) encourages the writing of diaries, etc. in individual cases.
Third, although self-esteem and self-worth are the core issues of many individual cases, the complexity of the problem often does not change immediately by raising self-worth, so it is still necessary to use other treatments in combination.
