What are banana shallots?

Banana shallots are a type of very large, elongated shallots that are sweeter, milder relatives of common onions. These Allium grow in clusters around the plant base and are less watery than most onions, with many very thin layers. Banana shallots can grow up to 7 inches (18 cm) in length and have smooth brown skin with extremely mild meat inside. They can be used in any recipe requiring ordinary shallots and some chefs prefer them because their large size makes them easier. Shalots can be saved for a relatively long time in a cool and dry place. They have a taste similar to regular onions, but are sweeter and milder, with less network compounds. All shallots are formed by very fine, thin layers and can be eaten either raw or cooked. Despite their similarity to onion, Shallots cannot be replaced freely due to their different taste.

Cooking banana shallots works similarly to cooking any other shallots or onions. This meal can be eaten raw, fried or roasted or serve as a cucumber. The shallots are also grated or chopped for use in sauces and spices. Due to the large size of these shallots, they can be cut and peeled quickly, similar to onions, although by immersing them briefly in boiling water makes the peeling process easier. Because banana shallots contain relatively little water, they must be cooked more finely than conventional onions because very high heato increases the risk of burning the bowl.
