What are Conkies?

Conkies are an integral part of Barbadian Cuisine and are usually served in November to celebrate independence. They are made of corn, pumpkin, coconut and sweet potatoes and are boiled in green banana leaves. They are quite difficult to work and are therefore a valuable accessory to any food. After independence was obtained from British colonies, on November 30, 1966, Conkies became a delicacy associated with independence celebrations. They are served almost exclusively during the independence celebrations every year. Pumpkin, sweet potatoes and coconuts are grated finely and mixed together with corn flour, sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg. Roams or cherries can be added to the mixture. The leaves are first sung by holding them above the flame for a few seconds. This makes them soft enough to fold. Conkies are usually served still packed in banana leaves.

As soon as they are packed, Conkies are steamed until they are fixed to the touch and served. The result is a beautifully yellow -orange cookie that is sweet and fragrant. A similar delicacy is made on Jamaica, which is called Duckanoo or blue drawers. These are usually cooked rather than steamed.

Independence in Barbados is not only celebrated by eating delicious desserts such as Conkies, but it is a monthly celebration of national pride. Important buildings such as parliament buildings, businesses are lit by national colors, gold and blue, the whole month of November. Throughout the month, an art festival is held to celebrate the talents of the country and various fairs and social events.

Family tradition and community play a major role in Barbadian culture and this includes the creation of Conkies. Recipes are handed over from generation to generation and the whole family is involved in the creation of Conkies - from the grid to the singing of banana leaves to the packaging. Everyone is included in this independence celebration.
