What are Nanaimo bars?

Nanaimo bars are rich, triple layered dessert squares. Sometimes they are called NBS and are named for British Columbia, Canadian city of Nanaimo. The woman entered the dessert in the recipe competition in the late sixties under the name Nanaimo Bars in honor of her home town and won! The lower part is later wet and chocolate flavored, the middle layer is a sweet vanilla pudding and the upper layer is a coating of chocolate. This creates a delicious effect when the chocolate icing mixes with a cream medium and damp bark when you bite it. Polo sweet chocolate, melted with butter on a low heat stove, is usually used for the top, although some people prefer to use unsweetened or bittersweet chocolate.

The cream medium layer looks and tastes rich thanks to vanilla pudding powder added to the cream. The center is a yellow or off-white friend that contrasts with the two chocolate layers that surround it. It is quite easy to make them and often serve for Christmas because of their wealth. While very butter and sweet, Nanaimo bars should also have a strong chocolate taste.
