What are the grapes of Scuppernong?

scuppernong grapes ( vitis rotundifolia ) were the first type of grapes actively cultivated in the United States. The word "Scuppernong" is derived from algonquin Indian ascopo , which means "Tree of Sweet Gulf". Grapes are grown in different parts of the United States, but are grown mainly in southeast parts. Muscadins grow wildly in the southeast and medium -west areas of the United States, in the states including Missouri, Kansas, Delaware and North Carolina. Scuppernongs thrive in the south because they require warmer temperatures and a relatively wet vegetation season. They are particularly successful on sandy soils and can be found on the south coast.

Scuppernong Grapes excel from other cultivars of muscadine because they are bronze or gold color. They have a high content of vitamin C and contain significant amounts of vitamin B and potassium. Mystery surrounds the mother vineyard, the oldest known vines in the United States.
