What are tiger nuts?

Tiger Nuts are tubers that grow natively in several tropical areas. Foliage plants can resemble grass and the aggressive growth pattern of the tiger nuts led to their reputation of invasive weeds in some places. The roots of the plants broadcast rhizomes that form small edible tubers. The tubers have a sweet, walnut taste and are used in a traditional Spanish dish called Horchaata or Milk of Tiger Nuts. The production of walnuts takes place mainly in Spain, in some South American countries and California, although it is possible to grow tiger nuts in a sufficiently large flower in the home. There are also a handful of different varieties, although most of them produce the same type of tuber from the root system. The plant itself forms flowers as soon as it ripens, although these flowers require a very long and hot growing season, so that plants growing in colder climatic zones do not have to flow or have only small flowers.

In cultivation for tuber processing, tiger nuts can benefit from being fertilized or fed by plant foods. This is because they are particularly sensitive to the presence of nitrogen in the soil, which stimulates increased leaf growth and at the same time reduce the amount of tubers. Like many rhizomes, the tubers need to grow dormancy next year. When properly drying, storing and maintaining moisture and molds, nuts can last a year or more and still have a good chance of germination when stopped.

In culinary applications is one of the main uses of tiger matrices to produce milk tiger. It is a drink that is popular in North Africa and Spain, where it is called Horchaata. Milk is produced by soaking very hard tubers in the water until it is removed from the starches and then brushes into the pulp. The pulp is soaked in water for several hours, then sugar and vanilla could be added. After cooling and tense, milk is ready for drinking.

tiger nuts can also be used to create flour by drying and grinding and cooking oil is produced by the cold press process. They can also be added to cosmetics and used as a bait for fishing. There are many beneficial minerals and vitamins, including vitamins C and E, potassium and magnesium. The very robust growth cycle of plants has also made them a potential crop for use in the production of biofuels.
