What is Ilish?

Ilish is an edible fish that plays an important role in the Bengal cuisine of the Indian subcontinent, especially in Bangladesh. The formal name of the species is Tenualosa ilisha . Ilish is closely related to the shadow and heritage and Hilsa Shad, or just Hilsa, are other common names for the same fish. They are anadromic fish: Ilish lives like adults in the ocean, but swims on rivers to lay eggs. Young hatch in rivers and swimming downstream to reach the ocean.

Ilish have compressed bodies that are deeper than wide. Their parties are slightly bulging and are covered with medium -sized silver scales with gold and purple undertones. The fish have a distinctive central notch in the upper jaws. Adults on average 14 to 16 inches (36 to 42 cm) in length and weigh up to £ 5.5 (2.5 kg) females are usually larger than men. Migration for spawnvezing fish into many rivers, including Iran Tigris and Euphrates, several Indian rivers and many main rivers in Bangladesh. Ilish are fast swimmers and is known to travel up to 44 miles (71 km) per dEN. In some rivers they migrate up to 750 miles (1200 km). Some longer rivers, including gangs, seem to have permanent populations within their higher reach.

The main friction of Ilish runs coincides with the monsoon season, which starts in August. The rivers will flood the monsoon rains and make it easier. Women put up to 2 million eggs. Young hatch in about a day in less than a tenth of the inch long (about 2.5 mm). Their journey to the sea lasts five or six months and spends one to two years in the sea to make their own friction.

Traditional and very beloved foods in the Bengal region are Ilish the main part of a trial commercial catch fish. They are normally taken in networks as they travel up and down on rivers or tight coastal waters. Traditionally, Ilish was not eating between October and January, so most of the young reached the sea, but fishing now continues all year and some populations are moved.
