What are boerenjongens?

literally translates into "farmer boys", Boerenjongens is a bowl of canned raisins made with brandy. This meal is traditionally consumed on Christmas holidays in the Netherlands. Sometimes it is called wedding tears, once it was often served at weddings. Boerenjongens, which is used as an appetizer, so dessert, usually sits months before it is consumed. Light or dark raisins can be used. In addition to raisins, sugar and cinnamon are usually added. Either ground cinnamon or cinnamon rods can be used and some versions can completely skip the cinnamon. Although brandy is traditionally a key element in this bowl, whiskey can be replaced.

To place boerenjongens, raisins and cinnamon in a pan and covered with water. Then the mixture is heated. The raisins swell when they cook and then are exhausted. After exhaustion, the sugar is added and mixed until it is disgust. Then alcohol is usually included. Some versions, however, allow a mixture of sugar-raisin to rest in jars two days before the addition of alcohol.

pThe completion of the mixture is placed in a clean pint or quart of the size and sealed. Bluerenjongens normally can sit in jars one to six months before use. Some versions may allow canned fruit to eat earlier. In general, however, it agrees that Boerenjongens is better, the longer it is allowed to sit.

Although this meal requires firmly sealing containers, Boerenjongens does not require preservation. The use of alcohol, rather than a pressure sealed container, fulfills the task of maintaining the raisin. Although the canning is not required, it is still important to ensure that the containers are extremely clean before placing the fruit inside and then sealed. This caution ensures the notes not entering the glasses.

Boererenjongens can be eaten simple or used as ingredients for other meals. When consuming, it is usually served in small glasses and eaten with spoons. It is also used as a folder in a fruith cakes or in various types of puddings such as buttermilk, macaroon or raisin. Boerenjongens can also be used as ice cream topping.

Although not always found easily outside the Netherlands, Boerenjongens can be purchased commercially online. Shops specializing in Dutch food can carry glasses. In some areas of the Netherlands, it is popular enough to have its own ice cream.
