are usually plants in the family Cruciferae herbs or small shrubs. Their stems contain alternate leaves that grow radially around the stem. These leaves are usually simple, but may have segments. Plants also produce small four -wheel flowers that contain six sticks: four high and two short. Their fruit is dry and it can be either capsules, which means that the fruit breaks down to release seeds or indehiscents, which means that a fruit that does not have to open to release its seeds.
There are more than 3,000 species in the family. The usual plants grow in northern, mild areas but can nAgain all over the world. They may be an annual, biannual or permanent. Plants
include a large number of "winter vegetables" from this family, which are plants that are best in colder climate or in colder seasons than in summer. These vegetables include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brushed sprouts. Although some plants in the Cruciferae family may taste bitter, all are edible and none are poisonous.
One popular type of cultivated Cruciferae is brassica oleracea , also known as wild cabbage. This species is originally from the coastal regions of southern and western Europe, but can be grown around the world, especially in a milder climate. There are many plants in this species that seem to be very different from each other because they all are cultivated by the same kind. Cultivars seem very different from each other because they were selected so that byly emphasized specific features. There are seven main groups Brassica Oleracea , many of which include known vegetables, including Kale, Chinese broccoli and Kohlrabi.
The name Cruciferae comes from the Latin word for the cross. The name was given by this family, because the flowers of this plant have four petals and resemble the shape of the cross. Although this name is still used, today it is more common to see this family of plants, known as Brassicaceasaae than Cruciferae.
