What is Sabich?

Sabich is a popular Israeli street food composed of Pita, a type of flat bread containing firmly cooked eggs, fried eggplant, Israeli salad and a number of accompaniment, depending on where they buy and who does it. It is assumed that it was created in Iraq and brought to Israel Jews who fled from Iraq in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century. They preferred it as a breakfast meal for shabbat , Jewish Saturdays. Traditionally, the pickled mango is enjoyed by the name amba .

Shabbat runs from sunset on Friday evening to sunset on Saturday evening. It is holy time and during this period cooking is not allowed, so it is consumed cold meat and pre -cooked meals. This is one of the reasons why Sabich originated because all the ingredients are cooked or raw. Although it was traditionally consumed only for Shabbat breakfast, Sabich is now consumed every day and has become one of the most popular Israeli fast foods.

There are different stories about where the name Sabich comes. Some believe it was named after the first Iraqi retailer to sell food in Israel. Others believe that the name is a combination of Hebrew words for salad, salad ; EGG plant or batzim ; and eggs, chatizilim .
