What is Stamppot?

Stampptot is a traditional meal in Dutch cuisine, which is often served in the cold winter months. Although its exact ingredients can vary very much depending on a particular chef, it often consists of boiled root vegetables, especially potatoes, but may also include other root vegetables such as turnups, pastin, carrots or celery root, which are crushed together. In order to fulfill the food more, it is also often paired with meat. These meat pairing may include smoked bacon; RookWorst, which is the Dutch style of smoked sausages; or strips of roasted pork fat known as lard. One of the broadly faithful beliefs is that the food occurred due to pieces of potatoes that remained in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century during the Eighty Years' War. Before the sixteenth centuries, potatoes, the main component in the bowl, were not considered to be present in the network.

Stamppot with čaOne hundred prepares first by cooking potatoes in the water until they are heated and have a soft, pliable texture. If other root vegetables are used in the bowl, it can be cooked either together with potatoes or in a separate pot. Once all root vegetables are cooked and softened, they are crushed together with potato mashher, wooden spoon or other flat bottom dishes until they are combined in the desired structure. If the meat is used in a bowl, it is usually cooked in a separate pan and then added to mashed vegetables.

Although the traditional stamppot recipe tends to be prepared mainly with potatoes and other root vegetables, there are common variations of ingredients. Instead, some versions of the bowl may replace the root vegetables cooked vegetables. Greens, which are often replaced in a bowl, include cabbage, kale, endive, spinach or cabbage. Further ingredients may also be added to make food tastier or provide a creamy texture such as milk, butter, broth or apple.
