What is Velhote?

Portuguese desserts include many rich and highly flavored sweet breads and yeast breads. In these types of desserts, cinnamon, saffron and vanilla are widely used; These ingredients are not originally from Portugal, but were introduced when the country was an imperialist power and has since become the basis of traditional cuisine. Most of these breads were first created in monasteries and then became popular in the surrounding regions. Velote is one such sweet bread and was created in the civilian parish Valadares in the town of Villa Nova de Gaia in the Porto district in Portugal. The lady of Braga, Maria Francisco da Silva, was attributed to the creation of a sweet bread Velhote in the 1880s. It was also specially baked during the most important festival of the parish, the holiday Cruzeiro to the Senhor dos Aflitos or the Cross of the Lord of the Afficical. To make Velhote, yeast and sugar are dissolved in warm water and the mixture is postponed aside.
