What is Yangmei?

Yangmei, also called Red Bayberry or Yamamomo, is a type of sweet fruit originally from Asia. It is almost unheard of in the United States, although the tree can be found growing along many city streets. The fruit has a very high content of vitamin C and has been grown in China for thousands of years, where raw, fermented in alcoholic beverages and used to produce a clear reddish dye that is extracted from the tree bark.

The tree grows up to 32 feet (10 meters) in a moderate environment. Yangmei fruit ripens on a tree during the summer months, with a very small window of maturity for just a few weeks. The tree is evergreen, with pale silvery bark and slender green leaves. It is often planted in areas with poor soil, because they are nitrogen repairers and complement the soil to which the soil is grown.

yangmei fruit is round and red and somewhat resembles strawberries in taste and texture. These fruits are usually very small, most of which are marginally larger than cherries. Yangmei, however, comes in the assortmentSweet and acidic flavors, with stricter pulp than usually in strawberry. A small pit can be found in the middle of the knob -shaped fruit.

because of the short window to the harvest, it is known that Yangmei trees do when they drop fruit. Bulpic reddish matter that results in is well known in a slight climate around the world, where the tree is often employed as ornamental, although few people realize that they are stepping on edible fruit. The fruit must be protected from harvesting to the consumer and is therefore often expensive.

yangmei fruit is, unfortunately, highly perishable. In China, it is often pushed into juice that can be transported or fermented because it will maintain longer than fine fruit. If consumers can get Yangmei, they should plan to store it under cooling for no more than one week, packed and kept far from another fruit. When shopping, people should look for fruit with evenRich red color, without bruises and without moisture. The meat will be creamy colors and the people who eat should make sure they destroy the pits.
