What is antic acid?

formic acid is a type of carboxylic acid. Its systematic name in the International Union of pure and applied chemical chemical nomenclature is methaneic acid, but the historical name continues to be commonly used. The chemical formula for antic acid is HCOOH or HCO 2 H. In its natural form it is a colorless liquid with a strong odor.

This acid naturally occurs in the poison of stinging insects, especially ants. Some species of ants have ovipositors that have evolved into sting that give a painful, irritating poison. Others are able to spray the nozzles of liquid in aggressors from poison bags that have evolved to produce antic acid. Spray can cause predators to cause painful or weakening burns and can leave people with irritating welds. The Latin word for ants "formica" gives its name to the family of ants, formacidae and antic acid.
