What are the different causes of excessive sleep?

Excessive sleeping, also known as hypersomnia, occurs when a person sleeps too much for two or more weeks every night. This equals about ten hours of sleep per night for an adult. The causes of excess sleep are usually tied to everyday habits that can be changed to treat excessive sleep problems. Excessive temples can lead to lethargy or slow during the day, accompanied by an urge to take a nap, a feeling of apathy, motivating problems for simple tasks, problems with paying attention and problems with storing information. One of the most common causes of excessive sleep is depression. Depression is often not treated, which means that sleep disorders that can be associated with depression are also not treated. While depression can lead to insomnia, it can also lead to excessive sleep. The suffering may feel unmotivated to get up from bed, sleep in odd times throughout the day and may not feel any reason to stay awake at night. Brain damage resulting from wound to head or other injury may permanently change sleep patterns and such conditions should only be treated with professionals inmedical areas. Hypothyroidism is another disease that can change sleep patterns and promote excessive sleep, and this disease is usually treated with drugs.

People who are overweight are generally considered more threatened by hypersomias, which may also worsen weight gain. The metabolism of the body slows down during sleep, which means that the body produces less energy, which in turn makes fat burning and weight loss.
