- Eating Sour Cherries and Reducing the Risk of Gout Recurrence
- We used case-crossover studies to validate a link between a number of recognized risk factors for gout recurrence. We expected to recruit patients with gout attacks and conducted a 1-year online follow-up. Participants were asked to provide the following information about the onset of gout: the date of the gout, symptoms and signs, medication (including the use of anti-gout medications), and exposure to potential risk factors for gout 2 days before the onset of gout (among which Includes the amount of sour cherries or sour cherry extract eaten daily). During the two-day control period, we assessed exposure to the same risk factors. For the relationship between eating sour cherries and the risk of recurrence of gout, we used conditional logistic regression for statistical analysis, and calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).
- As a result , the study included 633 patients with gout. Patients who had eaten sour cherries over 2 days had a 35% lower risk of recurrence of gout compared to those who did not eat sour cherries (multivariate OR 0.65 [95% CI 0.50-0.85]). Consumption of sour cherry extract also showed a similar negative correlation (multivariate OR 0.55 [95% CI 0.30-0.98]). Subgroup analysis of gender, obesity, purine intake, alcohol consumption, use of diuretics, and use of anti-gout drugs showed that eating sour cherries also showed the same effect of reducing the risk of gout recurrence. Patients who took cherries with allopurinol had a 75% lower risk of gout attack than those who took neither sour cherries nor allopurinol (OR 0.25 [95% CI 0.15-0.42]) [ 2-3] .
