What are Frankfurters?
Frankfurters, or Franks, refer to hot dogs and probably derived their name from the German origin of many different sausages. They are named around Frankfurt in Germany, but can be alternately called Wieners and named after the Austrian city of Vienna. You can call any Hot Dog Frankfurter, but sometimes a distinction between Frankfurters and Wieners.
At first, Frankfurters were probably made exclusively from pork, while Wieners were a mixture of pork and beef. Today, Frankfurters can be made exclusively from beef, while Wieners can only be made of pork. These two terms seem to come almost simultaneously in the language. It is assumed that Johann Georghehner may have invented or called a hot dog Wiener after a stepsing dog and then created his invention from Bavaria to Frankfurt in the 16th century, creating the name Frankfurter. However, some suggest that Frankfurter already existed in Germany and was invented closer to the 15th century.
When Frankfurters were first placed on Buns, there is also a dispute, but most likely occurred in the US around the late 19th century. Perhaps they could be exposed to the first at the World Fair in 1893 in Chicago. You will find a lot of arguments about when and where the invention of Hot Dogs from food historians and Hot Dog enthusiasts.
This brings us to modern Frankfursters, which are about 6-8 inches (15,24-20,32 cm) and are most often made of ground beef and mild spices wrapped in packaging. The perimeter is another variant. Some Franks are long and thin, while others are quite wide. Franks are often served on mushrooms, but some popular meals using hot dogs use them differently. For example, Franks and Beans is a popular food that it either produces at home or shops in cans at a local grocery store.
Franks are forgiving sausages, with a throwof the different ways to cook them. You can cook them, steam them, bake them, grill or fry Frankfurters and any other type of hot dog. They are often sold in packages about 8-12 dogs, but it differs according to the manufacturer. You can also buy them in bulk packages in warehouse stores like Costco. They are an economic choice, but some contain high amounts of fat and salt, except nitrates, so they may not be the healthiest everyday choice.
In some stores you will find lower salt, no nitrate or reduced fat. You will also find that there are kosher versions and even chicken or turkey franks. Because it is a popular food, you can expect a wide selection of varieties and brands in most food stores in the US.
