What are hidden food allergies?

Hidden allergies to food are negative reactions to food, drinks, food ingredients or compounds found in food. However, they differ from real food allergies because they do not create antibodies of immunoglobulin E (IgE) against food. Hidden food allergy is also known as food intolerance or non -allergic hypersensitivity to food. Food intolerance is more of a reaction to the digestive system than the reaction of the immune system.

The symptoms of hidden food allergies include headaches, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, irritability and nervousness. However, food intolerance may not always lead to symptoms if the individual does not eat much of offensive food or often does not eat food. Food allergies are not the same as food poisoning, which is the result of a spoiled or tainted food.
