What are Pirozhki?

pirozhki, literally "small cakes" in Russian, are small, stuffed buns, traditional Russian snacks. They can have a wide range of fillings, sweet and salty. The buns are made of yeast dough and are often shaken by an egg before baking to give them golden brown glaze. Food varies from Pierogi, Polish specialty, which is made of thin unleavened dough. Pirozhki is a singular form.

as cakes, Pirozhki can be filled with almost anything. Sweet pirozhki can be filled with stew or fresh fruit such as cherries, apples or apricots or chat cheese or jam. Spicy fillings include meat, fish, eggs, potatoes, vegetables and oatmeal or rice with a little meat or giblets to flavor. Any combination of these fillings can also create a delicious Pirozhk.

The dough can completely close the filling or can be arranged decoratively into the strips around the filling. The buns are either baked or fried. Traditionally of flats, they are served either alone or with soup, usually on the ODěd. In Russia, they are often sold by sellers on the street from heated trolleys. Pirozhki are usually hand sizes, not unlike the Italian Kalzon, but they can also be done to serve as appetizers.

While food was created in Russia, many countries in Eastern Europe and its surroundings have developed its own version of Pirozhok. Food is popular fast food sold on the streets of Armenia and Greece. The Latvian version, pīrāgi , has a crescent shape, made of bread dough and often full of bacon and onion. The buns are also consumed in Central Asia, where they are commonly sold by street sellers.

Greek version of Pirozhki was introduced to the kitchen of the land of Pontic Greeks, a group of ethnic Greeks who historically lived in Pontus, on the south coast of the Black Sea. They were controlled by their country by the Ottoman Empire and returned to today's Greece. The Greek version of food is usually deeply fried and can use a specific filling for GreeceFor a kitchen such as feta or halli cheese.

Pirozhki is quite a meal involved, although many people do it at home. The advantage of creating your own is that you can be creative with fillings and of course to have homemade gifts from the oven. For people without time or baking, Pirozhki is often available on Russian markets and bakeries. They may also be uncooked, so the customer can bake fresh at home.
