What is the pompret?
Pomfret is an informal category of fish containing more than 30 known species that are members of the Paridae family. All pomfraths can be identified by their flat bodies and a long dorsal fin, which is hitchhiking along the whole body of the fish. Different types of fish that are identified as pompretters come from at least eight different genera. Some species are relatively rare and even endanger extinction. Other types of pompret are relatively widespread and valuable species of commercial fish throughout Asia.
Pomfrets are included in the percorm category of fish. Perciforms are bony fish that have two almost independent fins, including the dorsal fin near the head and anal fins near the tail. The dorsal fins on perciforms are almost always much larger than anal fins. Unlike other Perciformes, the dorsal fin on the pomfret narrows to become anal fins without a clear distribution between them. The upper tip of the dorsal fin on these fish often stretches far back to the tail.
The fish must only have the right shape and structure of the fins to be considered pomfret, and such species of fish can be found throughout the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic. Most of these species are not related to each other and are considered to be pompret only based on their shape. There are eight families that have pomfret fish species. Several examples include brama , eumegistus , pterycombus and tactichthys . Rod Brama contains the largest number of pomfretts, including at least eight recognized species.
