What is a razor?

The razor is molluscs in the family Siliqua , which lives along the eastern and west coasts of the United States. Clam Atlantic and the Pacific razor can be found in the sand on the coast and in protected places and in a short distance at the sea. Kopal razor has become a popular sport along these coasts; Chemists look for razors for their sweet taste and large size.

This variety of clam is not very nice, with a long thin shell and a fleshy center, which often contains a large pink worm. Nemert worms appear inside the clam when they are about two years old. Although they are undesirable and ugly, they are completely harmless and do not adversely affect the quality of the clam.

Clams usually emerge during spring and summer in cold water. One female razor can produce up to 10 million eggs. They are microscopic sizes, but quickly develop on larvae can swim freely. They develop into young clams in just five weeks. Approximately 95% of these juveniles die before maturity, usually because ofnatural causes rather than disease or predators.

water currents carry clams and store them in various places where they settle and plunge into the sand. The depth and stability of the sand, as well as the supply of phytoplankton to which they feed on, determines whether they will survive young clams. The instability of the beaches and erosion causes some of the abundant razor populations to be short -term. Clams are washed along with beaches in heavy storms.
