What is beta vulgaris?
Member of the Amaranth family, beta vulgaris is a root vegetable known as beets. Beet is usually grown for culinary use. Vegetables are considered useful in a number of homeopathic herbal means. They can also be grown for decorative purposes.
Traditional folk medicine has used beta vulgaris in many ways. Vegetables were used in the treatment of constipation, wounds and fever in ancient Roman history. Beet juice was sometimes used as an aphrodisiac. The digestive and blood diseases were also treated with root vegetables.
Europeans used beta vulgaris to protect their bodies from oxidative stress. However, this application has not been definitively demonstrated in medical studies. Beta vulgaris can prove to be useful in the fight against cancer, protection against heart disease and prevention of congenital defects.
Depending on the diversity, beets may be red or purple color. They are usually bulbous and round, with a thin root protruding from below. Beet can also be shredded or used as a spice.
