What is Horehound?
The herb is a plant whose leaves, seeds or flowers are used to flavor food or in medicine. Other uses of herbs include cosmetics, dyes and perfumes. The name is derived from the Latin word Herba , which means "green crops". Horehound, Marrubium vulgare is a permanent herb in the family of mint. It is known as the "White Horehound" to distinguish it from another herb called Black Horehound, which primarily participates in medical use. One explanation is that it is from an old English word for a gray plant, Horhune , and was influenced by hound . Another explanation is that the name Horehound may come from being an ancient oncoming for the bite of angry dog, hora coming from Hoar means "old" or "gray". Latin name, marrubium vulgare , can come from the Hebrew word marrob means "bitter juice", which means Horehound was one of the bitter herbs thatIdov people ate on Passover. Horehound grows to a height of about 1 ½ foot (1.2 m), making it a good border plant. Small white flowers bloom from June to September, but do not have to bloom until the second year.
