What is Sauternes?

Sauternes is a sweet wine made of specially prepared grapes from the Sauternis area, located in the section Graves in Bordeaux France. What makes this type of wine unique is the use of grapes that have been exposed to a sponge called Noble Hnic. Hodting mushrooms cause increased sweetness that makes Sauternes popular French dessert wine. The types of grapes with regard to the nobles used in Sauternes include grapes Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

The balanced sweetness and acidity of this dessert wine complements the strong taste of old cheeses such as Roquefort and Muenster. Wine rot is commonly administered to approximately 53 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) with years poured at a slightly warmer temperature. Like most French dessert wines, Sauternes is often sold in 375 milliliter bottles that have half the size of a traditional bottle of 750 milliliters. Personal portion sizes are also less than many wines approximately 2 to 3 ounces of fluid (59 to88 milliliters) on a glass of wine.

weather conditions from year to year significantly affect the character of each year. The percentage of grapes Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle are adjusted for any production to ensure optimal balance and rich taste. Some high -quality Sauternes are aged for 100 years to intensify their variety of taste and increase the viscosity.

The warm and humid climate Sauternis causes the vines to be particularly susceptible to fungal infection called botrytis cinerea. Many vineyards in the region are located in an area between two rivers, where air masses of contrast temperatures collide. During the warm summer months, these weather conditions tend to create a layer of moisture that falls on the vines when the sun decreases. This fog coating provides sufficient moisture for fungal until the water has been evaporated in afternoon heat. Sauternes producers oftenThey apply these conditions when they naturally do not experience a slight fogging of their wine vines in the cold of the evening.

Sauterne wine is different from True Sauternes. The term sauterne wine concerns a large number of white wines made in California. California produced by Sauterne wines are often sweet dessert wines made of white grapes that have never been exposed to mold. Sauterne wine is often much cheaper than the real French Sauternes, but usually has a reduced component of acid and a less balanced taste.
