Why does so many people have bad memories of high school?

The effects of high school self -esteem, school behavior, academic performance and later adjustments to life were well documented. These temporary years since the years 5-9, depending on the individual school, show that there is an increase in stress, reduce academic performance and increase in behavior, especially in the first year in high school. This is not surprising many people who considered their own high school or junior high experience unfortunate or difficult.

Many people, although certainly not everyone, have bad memories of high school experience and there may be many reasons why these experiences seem common. The age range of children attending high school, usually from about 12-14 years, is one of the significant physical changes due to growing bodies and advent of puberty. As every parent can testify, a child entering puberty does not necessarily have to be the easiest person with whom he can be dealt with in a family or social settings. Hormonal spikes and changes as well asGreater awareness of the body and perhaps discomfort with changing body can easily convert to less than perfect behavior in the school environment, either towards teachers, and most often towards peers.

In fact, children in secondary schools are organized in peer groups and students who seem to seem to differ together with them often do not easily accept other students. Bullying is more common and difficult of secondary schools, because supervision in high school environment is smaller. Students at the moment, despite zero tolerance politicians, may show less probability of reporting the behavior of bullying for fear of recruitment.

Further, especially in the first year of secondary school, students are also under the stress of a large crossing. In fact, studies have shown that students in the 6th year of the element in the elementary school and the students in the K-8 environment tend to work better in mathematics than the children in theThey make a transition to high school. The need to track classes, negotiations with more teachers and be responsible for responsibility for actions can negatively contribute to the student's ability to learn.

In addition, the average elementary school student comes from a classroom of a maximum of 40 students with usually one teacher. Once in high school, the student moves to several classrooms where every teacher can have 150 students or more. This means that despite the best efforts of secondary school teachers, not all students are so well known. This can be reflected in the feeling of isolation for each child.

In essence, there are several major stressors in the high school environment:

  • Physical changes.
  • dramatic transition from elementary school environment.
  • greater requirements emotionally, behavioral and academically.
  • less individual attention of teachers.

behavior that we would very prefer to our children to avoid as sexual activity, and use drugs and alcohol in high school more common. Children of this age do not have to become sexually active or illegally use controlled substances, but probably know children involved in these behavior. Older students in high school environment can also contribute to this negative effect, as the occurrence of drug use and sexual activity annually in adolescence.

At that time, even if every individual child can be beautiful and amazing, in a highly pressure environment with so many stressors, they can respond by negotiations. This is reflected in a difficult and negative time for many students and is responsible for many of us whoThey have bad memories of high school or junior college.

Since there is so much research on this matter, some school districts have started to eliminate secondary schools. Studies show that students are better able to switch to a larger school environment as a newcomer in high school than they can do as 5, 6 or 7. Nevertheless, it should be noted that people from the K-8 settings often report a similar emotional unrest, especially around the mutual relationships reporting secondary schools in the 5th to 7th years.
