What is Volkmann's contractor?
Volkmann's contracture, sometimes known as the ischemic contracture of Volkmann, is a condition in which it shortens and solidifies the muscles of the fingers, wrists, forearms or a combination of three three. This means that the joints are straightened to create a deformed look. Muscle changes are the result of insufficient blood supply, commonly caused by swelling inside the arm that rises blood vessels and prevent blood flow. Volkmann's contracture is often painful and may differ in severity from mild to serious. The condition is treated with surgery to reduce pressure inside the arm and prevents permanent damage if done in time. One of the most common causes is a broken elbow, which often occurs in children. Fractures including other bones into the forearms and swelling caused by bite and burns can also lead to compartment syndrome. Injuries and bleeding can lead to increased pressure in the arm as tight bandages, braces or castings can.
The treatment of the contracture of Volkmann initially involves removing everything like a bandage that can compress the limb. Surgery known as fasciotomy is performed urgently to prevent the development of permanent contracture. Fasciotomy involves cutting skin and tissue or fascia that closes part of the arm in which the pressure increases. Pruning the surrounding tissue releases pressure inside the arm compartment and restores blood flow. Any dead portions of the muscle are cut off.
In cases where fasciotomy cannot prevent Volkmann's contract, since permanent muscle contraction has already been determined, other forms of treatment can still be carried out. Fatter cases, WDE contracture affects only two or three fingers, can be treated with physical therapy and splints. Surgery can be done to extend the tendons and improve the function of the hand.
Heavy cases in which the contracture affected all the muscles of the forearm that bent and straightened the wrist and fingers, might require more extensive surgery to remove damaged muscle and scar tissue. The tendon transmission procedures can be carried out, where the existing tendon is separated before connecting to another muscle. This allows you to move movements that were not previously possible due to the loss of muscle function after the Volkmann contract.
