There are two basic types of rods that are used with barbel boards. One is a long rod that is used for exercises that work both weapons simultaneously. In these types of exercises, the movements that make weapons are carried out in tandem. Benches are a common type of exercise that are carried out using this longer type of rod.

Barbell plates fit on these rods in exactly the same way they fit on the bars for longer models. The common exercise used by this type of dumbbell is biceps.
