What is Cuban pastry?

Cuban pastry is a small, filled pastry traditionally made of leaf pastry and often described as similar to American turnover. Eat warm if possible, and with coffee, the Cuban community is a common breakfast or refreshment. The fillings can be sweet or salty, and some such as Guava paste or jelly are traditional popular. Cuban pastries can be made at home, but because it is time -consuming to prepare, most people buy them in bakeries. Pasteles is a Spanish word for cakes and a small form, pastelitos, or "small cakes", is a Cuban term for these pastries.

They can be round, rectangular, square or triangular and sometimes has a traditional relationship to the fillings.

As well as turnovers, Cuban pastries can have any filling, but several contents are definitely traditional. Guava jelly or paste made of tropical fruit Guava is a classic filling for sweet Cuban pastries. Other traditional sweet fillings are the jelly Guava paired with cream cheese, sweetened coconut and sweetened cream cheese. Less traditional options include Apple, Cherry or any way that could be used to fill the cake.
