In the subtropical climate of South Africa, this fruit has now become what is now known as Zautjie.
From 2000 to 2009 it was the most expensive citrus fruit grown in South Africa. The reason is partly the fact that South Africa is the only producer of Startjie and the demand for it has remained very stable for many years. Most Zaartjia is exported to European countries.
