What is a straw mushroom?
Paddy straw mushroom, known simply as straw fungus and formally as Volvariella Volvacea , is a type of fungus that is widely distributed throughout Asia. Thumb size mushrooms are strongly grown for food and export in Asia and can be found in canned and dried forms in other parts of the world. Straw mushrooms are often used in chips and add a strong slightly musty appetite. In addition to the traditional growth medium, straw fungus can also be found on many types of plant materials such as other straws or grass, compost and wooden piles. The straw sponge is usually grown for consumption on a mixture of cotton fiber and unpeeled straw. When it is mature to eat, the fungus with straw is approximately thumb and distinguishes its light pink gills and white -quality spores. The mushrooms have long white stems with flascent bases and drop yellow on brown caps with a partial veil.
