What is Bac ha?
Bac ha is a Vietnamese name for Asian vegetables known under various names in English, including Taro stem and ear elephant. The scientific name of the plant is alocasia odora . The race is originally from Southeast Asia and is available on Asian markets and special shops. It is also possible to grow bac ha at home, because it is often used as an ornamental plant in mild and tropical gardens. The use of "Taro stems" to describe Bac Ha increases confusion. One part of this plant, however, are stems, not Corms (something similar to bulbs), as is the case with Tara. Although Corms can be consumed, the primary reason for growing the plant is fleshy long stems, not CORM. As with TARO, however, Bac ha must be carefully cooked before consumption or the plant can stimulate an undesirable reaction.
The reaction is the cause of rafide, calcium oxalate crystals that are formed in the cells of the stalks and korms of the plant. Crystals receive a structure similar to the needle that causes to pierceHocks, leading to irritation for consumers. In TARO it is believed that other compounds can act in accordance with these crystals to cause a reaction that can sometimes be extreme.
Bac ha stems are sharp and slightly spongy and very well absorbed the appetite in food such as soups, fries and meat plates. When they cook, they become tender and soft. This plant also has large heart -shaped leaves, which are often removed before sending the race to the market. On the market, the stalks of BAC ha should be sharp, without any hint of wilting, leanness or extreme color. They can be stored under cooling for up to one week.
In the horticulture, BAC HA is sometimes referred to as elephant ears, as wide leaves stand directly from the stems rather than falling. As the plant produces new stems, it grows slowly and can under the conditions of good growing at a height of six feet (two meters). The plant prefersRuje tropical for substropic conditions and in cold weather is not doing well. If the plant is not satisfied with its cultivation conditions, it will be sleeping and produced smaller and smaller leaves until it completely die. However, if the root is still healthy, BAC HA can be revived.
