What is Braai?

Braai is a South African word for grilling, plural Braai and refers to food cooked above open fire, usually outside. Originally it was derived from the African word, braaivleis , which means grilled meat, but now it is a generally used term in South Africa. Braai is a South African institution that includes not only cooking meat on a grid above carbons, but also includes a social aspect - time spent around Braai with family and friends is part of the integral South African heritage. Food ranges from simple everyday meals to gourmet delicacies.
