What is diet therapy?

Dietary therapy is a wide term for practical nutrition as preventive or remedial treatment of the disease. This usually involves adjusting an existing diet lifestyle to promote optimal health. In some cases, however, an alternative lifestyle plan may be developed in order to remove certain foods to obtain health. For example, the second type of diet therapy is often recommended for those who suffer from allergies, including those not related to food. Elimination dietary therapy is often considered useful in improving symptoms associated with attention disorder and hyperactivity in children. This diet is often named after a particular area or culture that regularly consumes certain types of food and are relatively without certain diseases. For example, the Mediterranean diet emphasizes the use of healthy sources of monounsaturated fat, such as olive oil. Is also abundant in lean meat, whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables while red meatO and dairy products are limited. Studies have shown that those who receive this type of diet can significantly reduce cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease.

Another "specialized" diet, known as the ESKIMO diet, also reduces the risk of heart disease, although there is a clear difference between the eating habits of this culture and those who live along the Mediterranean. In fact, people from Greenland and Alaska rarely experience heart disease, yet they consume a high -fat and cholesterol diet. The paradox is caused by the consumption of large amounts of fish, namely salmon and mackerel. Unlike the Mediterranean philosophy, the pursuit of monounsaturated fats is therefore an eskimo diet rich in the heart of a healthy omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids instead.

Dieteotherapy can also be used in preventing or complementary treatment of cancer. Intake of high levels of antioxidants and bioflavonoids, which come from many fruits and vegetables, determines oxidative stress in the body, which can help prevent many types of cancer. Specifically, vegetables in a mustard family, such as broccoli and cauliflower, can reduce the risk of stomach and colon cancer. In addition, the total fat reduction in the diet to 30 percent of the total caloric daily intake can reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer.

Dietary therapy specific for the condition usually requires the use of food list for food and, more importantly, foods to avoid. For example, dietary therapy of arthritis consists of anti -inflammatory foods and elimination of food with high oxalic acid and those known to reduce calcium absorption. On the other hand, dieteotherapy for depression strives to increase the production of some brain hormones such as serotonin, increase of complex carbohydrates, vitamins B and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
