What is the grasshopper?

The cake of grasshoppers is usually named for its green color, although modern recipes can skip the color of the cake green. It was probably invented in the 1950s in the United States and could be inspired by a drink called Grasshopper developed at about the same time. It is a chiffon cake that is usually produced with a cookie bark. Some versions of this Philippine cake used real grasshoppers. These insects are consumed in many cultures and can be used in various desserts where they can be sweet and baked, providing crunchy and some very tasty confectionery. The cobble cake of the 1950s carries a small similarity to the versions that have insects as a primary component. In the case of a grasshopper, a common flavor used Alcohol in the form of CRème de Menthe and sometimes other alcohols such as Crème de Cacao. For teetothalers, it would be possible to achieve mint aroma using mint extracts, although it could still contain a small amount of alcohol. Most often the biscuit is made of chocolate wafers, so the cake has a taste of chocolate and mint. The bark is baked for a few moments and then chilled. When the chiffon is ready, usually above the double boiler, it is chilled and then a spoon over the bark. The cake tends to be cold and many love its refreshing mint taste.

There can be very big differences between classic grasshoppers and modern recipes. Since gelatin can be somewhat annoying, many people are now preparing a cake by melting Marshmallows and mixing them with milk or Whipping Cream and sometimes cream cheese. The green food dye can be optional and, if not used, the cake could be called "Mint Patty Cake" instead. Some people may prefer to use the cracker bark of Graham and other recipes advocate the use of specificCookies like Oreos®.

In the US, the cake of grasshoppers tends to be the most popular in the south, but other parts of the country also enjoy it. The cake has gained popularity, especially up to 70 years, but is now served with less frequency. Many ice cream stores earned the taste of this cake by producing its own version with mint or mint chocolate and biscuit. Some ice cream shops are particularly known for their variants of locusts.
