What is karaage?

Karaage is a popular Japanese food that is most often made of chicken. To prepare the bowl are small pieces of chicken, meat or fish marinated, mined in flour and fried. Crispy pieces of meat are traditionally served with fresh lemon wedges and mayonnaise for soaking.

The word "karaage" is pronounced "Kah-Rah-Ah-Gay" and it is actually a combination of two words. "Kara" means "China" and "age" means "fried". Together these two words mean "deep fried Chinese style".

Boney meat is usually used to make karaage. The meat is usually cut into thin strips or pieces of bite size. Chicken is the most popular choice, although boned beef, pork or solid fish can also be prepared in the style of karaage.

For chicken karaage, breasts or thighs can be used. The skin can be left intact or can be removed. Chicken wings can also be prepared in the style of karaage. Variation on the bowl is called nankotsu karaage, which is made of ton raining chrChicken. The busiest and tastiest karaage is made of chicken thighs with intact skin.

The caraage marinade usually includes soy sauce and, in the case of desirable award -winning ground garlic, grated ginger and small sesame oil. Ponza, soy sauce with citrus flavor, can be used instead of ordinary soy sauce. Mirin, sweet Japanese wine for cooking, can be replaced because of. In Japan, for the coating of meat is used finely ground wheat flour called karaageko. It creates a light, crispy peel that does not become saturated with cooking oil. If the karaageko is unavailable, a corn starch or potato starch may be replaced. Peanut oil, rapeseed oil or vegetable oil are the best choice for frying.

If the Kewpie is not unavailable, a home version with an ordinary mayonnaise and rice vinegar or cider, spiced with a small monosodic glutamate (MSG), can be made. A small amount of hot mustard or caynian pepper can also be added for spices.

Karaage is a favorite food in Japanese pubs Izakaya. Since it can also be cold, it is also a popular choice for bento lunch boxes. Karage is also included in many Japanese restaurants outside Japan.
