What is Borg Scale?

The Borg scale is a method of measurement of the perceived exertion of a person. The extent developed by Professor of Stockholm University Gunnar Borg in the 1880s. The scale, the scale does not require any equipment, but asks participants who are involved in physical activity to assess its perceived level of exertion from light to strenuous. The scale measures the exertion between six and 20. During the exertion, the person gives the Borg scale to decide how strenuous its activity is. There is six lowest levels on the scale and 20 is the highest.

During the activity, the person is asked to honestly evaluate their level of effort and assign it a number between six and 20. This number is called the evaluation of perceived exertion. Six represents a person who does not take the effort. If a person evaluates his perceived exertion between seven and eight, he makes a modest effort. Nine and 10 are considered to be a very light activity, such as walking.

As the number grows, the level of the perceived effort of the person increases. The evaluation of perceived exertion 11 or 12 is classified asAbout light and it is an activity that needs some effort, but it is not enough to cause a person to get out of breath. At the age of 13 or 14, the person is involved in an activity that accelerates the heart rate. When the scale reaches 15, one breathes quickly and experiences a racing heart and at the age of 20 works at a level that cannot be maintained at all times.

A person can multiply his physical exertion by 10 to provide the actual heart rate during physical activity. If the evaluation of the perceived exertion of persons 15 is estimated at 150 rhythms per minute. The estimate may fluctuate depending on the age and human health.

The perceived exertion is how intense a person believes that his body works. During physical activity, one will undergo increased heart rate, level of breathing, sweating and muscle fatigue. By monitoring how the body feels during physical activity, it can decide when to increase or reduce intensity.

While the original Borg scale uses measurements between six and 20, there is another version. The updated version of the American College of Sports Medicine Measures perceived exertion between 0 and 10. Zero suggests that no perceived exertion, while 10 indicates the highest possible level.
