What is tramezzino?

Tramezzino is an elegant type of sandwich that is very popular in Italy. They are uninvited triangular sandwiches made of soft white bread with bark removed and contain a large number of fillings. Like English tea sandwiches, they are very popular in Rome, Turin and Venice.

There are a huge number of debates about the origin of this fine sandwich. The Venetians claim that Tramezzino was first established in Mestre at the end of the 50s. Others believe that they are originally from Turin and that the Mulassano café, which is still famous for its Tramezzini today, served them for the first time in 1925. Some are of the opinion that it was import, bought to Turin or Venice by someone who visited England.

The very famous poet and writer named Gabriele d'Anunzio is attributed by the name Tramezzino and thus the "Italian" English word for a modest sandwich. There are different interpretations of the word tramszino, but can be understood as "between two" or "something in the middle" or as "snack between them".

The basic formula for tramszino remains the same wherever it is made. Bread is a very important component and some even protect the secrets of the baking process. Tramezzino is made of damp, soft, white bread with cut off crusts. Attention is paid to ensuring that the bread is not too soft or too spongy. The slices of white bread are diagonally cut into triangular shapes, which are then covered with the correct amount of mayonnaise.

Deft hand is required because too much mayonnaise makes it a wavy mess that easily disintegrates and leaves too little bread a little dry. Costs differ from place to place. Standard stuffing includes ingredients such as cooked ham, capers, cheese, tuna and canned mushrooms. Another stuffing could contain hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, arugula and cucumbers. The sky is the limit when it comes to stuffing and combinations, and it is known that some restaurants have up to 40different types of tramezzini.

The way in which sandwiches are designed also differ. A small amount of stuffing is usually placed between two slices of white bread. However, some people use three slices of bread instead of two and others accumulate them high with a very large number of stuffing. Tramezinno can also be considered an Italian version of the popular club sandwich.

To qualify as a real tramezzino, the sandwich must be a pleasure for the eye and the taste buds. Freshly made tramezinni are arranged according to the color of their filling behind the glass cases in the imaging windows. Authentic tramsino is thin and elegant, made of fresh bread and fillings and contains a lot of taste. People eat these small sandwiches after all the time of the day, although they are usually the best when they are eating in the morning. They are located in many bars and restaurants of Italy and are perfect as light appetizers or as a fast, complete lunch.
