What is ERCP with sphincterotomy?

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography or ERCP is a medical procedure used in the diagnosis and treatment of problems that include tubes or channels that lead from the abdominal and gall bladder. ERCP with sphincterotomy involves creating a larger hole in one of the pipes, for example, the bile stone removal. During the procedure, an endoscope, a long slender tool with a connected camera, is used to view the pipeline and to injection special dye. This dye is displayed on X -rays that are removed simultaneously and reveal the contours of the pipeline in detail. Then the gallstones wedged inside the bile can be located, which drains the gallbladder and can be treated using tools connected to the endoscope. Usually, sedative is given to release the patient and minimize discomfort during endoscopy. It's often possible to return home on the same day as the procedure.

at the beginningAt ERCP, the endoscope is handed over to the mouth, down around the stomach and a part of the intestine called duodenum. Here the abdominal and bile bladder pipes are connected and open to the duodenum via the valve. The valve is an opening with a circle of muscle around it, known as the sphincter Oder. The channel in the endoscope is used to injure dye into ductal systems through sphincter and X -ray images are taken simultaneously, allowing the bile canal and pancreatic pipeline evaluation.

If the bile stone is found inside the bile, sphincterotomy may be required. Sphinterotomy includes a small cut in a muscle circle that forms a sphincter from the Oder. This is used to enlarge the opening of the sphincter, and then special tools connected to endoscopunaches can be used stone or stones from the pipeline and to the intestine. Sometimes it may be necessary to break a large stone to extracted.

ERCP with sphincterotomy can be done to treat conditions other than bile stones. Sometimes Sinkter Odedi may not work with Administrationand may not open, which causes digestive juices to accumulate and lead to possible complications such as the pancreatic inflammation or pancreatitis. In severe cases, sphincterotomy may be necessary. Sphinterotomy can also be performed when doctors want to expand the narrowed pipe by inserting short lengths of hoses known as stents. Although in most cases ERCP with sphincterotomy does not lead to any complications, there may sometimes be problems such as chest infections or internal bleeding.
