What is intratecal baclofen therapy?

Baclofen is an agonist of gamma-aminobutyic acid (GABA), which is used to suppress spasticity and desire that has suffered alcohol and cocaine rapists. Intrattekal delivery system is a subcutaneous abdominal pump that transmits Baklofen via the catheter to the spinal canal. Intratecal baclofen allows lower doses, less side effects and easier to maintain the drug. The patient and carer must be vigilant when monitoring the problems with the pump, which can lead to overdose or withdrawal. Baclofen works to normalize the balance of excitation and inhibitory neurotransmitters by controlling GABA and relaxing hyperactive muscles. It is prescribed to control spasticity in disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, spastic diplegia and spinal cord injury, and is also used to treat cocaine alcohol.

Baclofen can be administered oral but intratecal administration of baclofENU into the spinal cord seems to be the most effective method, requires lower doses of drugs and causes less side effects. Near the waist just below the skin, a small titanium pump is located about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick by 3 inches (7.6 cm) in diameter. The pump has a loading tank for a drug storage and can be programmed to release the drug at a suitable dose. The catheter transports Baklofen from the pump directly to the backbone channel. The pump is checked, reprogrammed and re -loaded in the doctor's office every one to six months and the new pump is implanted for approximately every five to seven years when the battery is exhausted.

intratecal treatment of baclofen is usually recommended when spasticity disrupts personal safety or normal activity of the patient. This DEG Drmetoda is relatively free of maintenance, so it is advantageous if the loaders of spasticity and patient care becomes for carers. Intratecal Baclofen can also be tested if the dose for oral baclofen has been high and side effectKY exceeded the benefits of the drug.

4 Problems may also occur when the patient cannot respond to the pump alarm, warnings against the disorder or that the pump is almost empty. These problems can cause incorrect dose delivery and result in overdose or withdrawal. Symptoms of overdose of baclofen include the return of poor muscle control, drowsiness, seizures, inability to breathe and coma. The withdrawal is characterized by increased spasticity, sweat, rash, fever, increased heart rate, and if not treated, organ failure and death.

overdose or download can be prevented by careful selection of patients who are able to monitor their own pumps or have a responsible carer. The pumps must be completed and checked one week before the drug is left out. In addition, the patient and the caregiver must learn to recognize the early signs of the download and overdose with Baklofen and immediately seek medical attention.
