What is Cornish pastes?
Cornish pastes (pronounced the first syllable, such as the word "past") is a mass cake or a turn named after its origin in England Cornwall. It is usually made of pieces that is folded and clamped together and creates a semicircle shape or crescent. Traditionally, cornish pastes contain chopped steak, onions and potatoes, although there are dessert versions called turnover that could have fruit in them. Cornwall comes a slang term for pastes, oggy , which can still be used in parts of the UK to refer to this meat cake. Today, you can find them most often in British pubs and to some extent in Irish pubs. You can also find them in the US in the UK inspired restaurants or pubs and as a popular choice at Renaissance fairs and Scottish games. The freezer sections in the UK with food can carry pastins in various flavors, some including cheese, vegetarians and many meat selections. However, the real cornish paste is almost always whoeverBeef, onion and potatoes with a little pepper for spices.
Depending on the recipe, cornish pastes may have a somewhat dry taste. In pubs and restaurants, you may find that it is served with brown sauce to moisten food. Paste bark also varies. Some are made of finer inflated bread, although it is not traditional, while others are made of a simple piece. The first pastiny should not represent a fine bark, but rather quite dense, because cornish pastes often had to survive, perhaps most of the day under harsh conditions. The reworking of the bark could help to survive to drop the paste, and allegedly a good trap was considered if he was able to cancel it down and load it intact.
This does not mean that most pasties would be intentionally dropped. In fact, the miners had little furnaces in which all pastes brought to work could be stored and maintainedana in the warmth. Since it was usually the only meal that miners would have during the backbreaking and long hours of work, the shepherd had to be full and hearty to withstand such harsh working conditions.
If you try Cornish pastes, you will notice that the traditional type is quite fulfilled, albeit a little dry if it is not overwhelmed with sauce or, as they prefer, ketchup. In other cultures, many meat cakes are quite similar to the paste. Especially Empanadas, although they often contain more spicy meat, have almost identical shapes and size as cornish pastes. Another similar dish is Calzone, although calzons are usually full of cheese and salty meat and are more related to pizza.
