What is nunt?
Nunt, sometimes referred to as Honey Nougat, is a simple Jewish pastry that generally served during the Purim celebration. It includes walnuts and honey and is similar to nugat or fragile. Other versions of traditional Nougs can be found in various Jewish cultures and are distributed during Purim, Rosh Hašanah and Passover. Unlike Nougat, however, no egg whites are used in Nunt and traditionally chewing texture than fragile. Honey is boiled with sugar and coarsely chopped walnuts until the sugar is dissolved. The mixture then extends over a wet, straight surface and is left to cool. After cooling, they are cut into diamond -shaped pieces and consumes or gives them as gifts.
variations on traditional nunt may include adding poppy seeds, sesame seeds or ginger. Modern recipes include a combination of nuts such as almonds or Macadamias. Nunt, like all Purim, is kosher. Purim is a celebration that commemorates the victory of the Jewish people over their enemies at the time of the ancient Persian Empire in the fifth century BC. The story, as is recorded in the book Esther of the Hebrew Bible, tells of Haman's land, advisor to the Persian Emperor to destroy the Jewish people. The Jewish people are spared by Esther's intervention.
It is a tradition to give mutual gifts of food and drink to friends and family during Purim. Although it is popular, Nunt is not the only traditional meal served during this celebration. Seeds and nuts often eat Esther, who, according to the Hebrew Bible, ate only these meals at the Imperial Palace because no other kosher meals were available. Special breads called Ojos de Haman or "Haman's eyes" are baked in the shape of a head with the eyes of eggs that are later pulled out to represent the destroying Haman.
