What is Lemang?
One of the traditional foods of Malaysia, Lemang is a delicacy containing sticky rice and coconut milk that is baked inside hollow bamboo sticks. In Malaysia and in some parts of Indonesia, it is very popular, considered a special meal and is widely consumed during the holidays, such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Haji when Muslims break their land. During the festivities, numerous Lemang stands appear to sell these bamboo tubes in large quantities. In addition to road suppliers, this meal can also be found in many places all year round. Preparations include washing and soaking the rice several hours before cooking to soften. The bamboo stems used are usually 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) in length and have a diameter of about 8 centimeters (3.1 inches). In order to prevent the rice from holding up bamboo, the pre -pre -pre -leaf leaves of bananas that are rolled and placed to completely cover the interior. They are full of rice until they are about three quarters full and spilled with coconut milk.
cooking Lemang is not easy; Bamboo stems must be baked on a slow fire for about three to four hours and from time to time turn so that the rice inside evenly boils. After cooking, the bamboo tube is divided open and removed the rolled banana leaf containing the mixture. The best combination for LEMang is to eat with a spiced curry type called rendang, that can contain skopot, beef or chicken as the main ingredient.
