What is the body adiposity index?
Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is a recently developed alternative to body weight index (BMI), which is allegedly better body fat in individuals than BMI. The formula divides the perimeter around the widest part of the hips and buttocks in centimeters with a height in meters, when the second roots of the height in meters, minus 18.
The main argument against the use of BMI measurements to estimate whether the individual is overweight is that the BMI equation only takes into account the height and weight of the person. This level of body fat has long been criticized for inaccuracy, especially when it comes to individuals with large muscle mass or very small muscle mass. For example, a 150 pound woman (68 kg), five feet, six inches (1.67 meters) high with a very low muscle mass a high percentage of body fat should the same BMI as 150 pounds (68 kg) of a muscular woman of the same height that has a much lower percentage of body fat. Even whenThey are clearly at different fitness levels, BMI measurements would consider them the same.
The body adiposity index takes into account the height and perimeter of the individual's hip. In the same example, it is very unlikely that both women £ 150 have exactly the same hip circuit. Because muscles weigh much more than the same volume of fat, a muscular woman will have more likely a smaller hip circuit, because she has less fat on her body than the other woman. The adiposity index would reflect this difference where BMI did not reach.
, according to Fitness, one possible deficiency of the body adiposity index is that it has been developed and Hjak was primarily tested on Hispanic Americans and African -Americans who have different body fat distribution than Americans of European origin and other populations. Measurement of hip found as an accurate predictor of the amount of body fat in Hispanic Americans and African -Americans may not needAlso work on people from other populations who can carry weight on the abdomen, lower on thighs or elsewhere. The adiposity index may also not be accurate in children who carry body fat much differently than adults.
